Jonas von Milczewski

About me

I am a PhD student in theoretical physics, working in the group of Dr. Richard Schmidt.

My research is focused on few- and many-body phenomena in two- and three-dimensional ultracold quantum gases and two-dimensional semiconductors.

Research interests

Research interests:

-Strongly-coupled Bose-Fermi mixtures.

-Quantum impurity problems, Fermi polaron.

-Quantum phase transitions.

-Functional renormalization group approaches.

-Variational methods.

-Diagrammatic methods.

-Ultracold gases

-TMDs.

I have been pursuing a PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics since december 2018. Currently I am working on a characterisation of the phase diagram of two-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures in the regime of fermion dominated density imbalance using functional renormalization group (fRG) approaches. Here, the phase diagram connects to the extreme limit of the Fermi polaron problem. Additionally, I am studying the properties of the Fermi polaron in two dimensions using the fRG.

Before joining MPQ, I obtained my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from ETH Zurich, where I completed my Master’s thesis in the group of Prof. Zilberberg. My thesis focused on near-field Casimir forces in multilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures and we proposed an approach to describe these forces and studied the effects of disorder and finite thickness. Before starting my thesis I completed semester projects in the groups of Prof. Renner and Prof. Home.
