Dr. Seth Rittenhouse

Biography 

After completing his Bachelor’s studies in Physics and Mathematics, and later a Master’s in Mathematics, at Western Washington University in Washington State, USA, Seth Rittenhouse went on to complete his Ph.D. at JILA and the University of Colorado in 2009 under the supervision of Professor Chris Greene.

He was then awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Institute for Theoretical Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics at Harvard University and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, USA. From there, he returned to WWU as an Assistant Professor before moving to the United States Naval Academy, where he served as an Assistant, and later Associate Professor.

He subsequently moved to Heidelberg University and the Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Research

Dr. Seth Rittenhouse specializes in theoretical atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics, studying how fundamental interactions give rise to complex quantum behavior in ultracold environments. His work centers on quantum few-body mechanics, Efimov physics, and low-energy collisional dynamics near absolute zero.

He models the exotic structures and long-range forces—such as charge-dipole potentials—that govern highly excited Rydberg molecules and ultracold polar systems.

By combining analytical theory with high-performance computing, his research reveals universal quantum phenomena that connect fundamental microscopic physics with cutting-edge experiments.
